10 June 2012
On 10 June, the United Nations Association in Sweden students and members, who were in New York City on a study trip from 9-14 June, participated in a workshop hosted by the ICRtoP on the Responsibility to Protect (RtoP, R2P). The study trip presented an opportunity to discuss current events with representatives from the United Nations as well as several other NGOs. The workshop at the ICRtoP included an introduction to the norm and its scope as well as an overview of the measures available within the RtoP framework and the role of actors at the international, regional, sub-regional, national and local levels. Participants also discussed the cases of Libya and Kenya in the context of RtoP in breakout focus sessions.
Daniel Fiott, Research Fellow at the Madariaga-College of Europe Foundation, participated in the workshop, leading a discussion on a case study and giving a lecture on “The European Union and the Responsibility to Protect”.
